A City of Wisdom Called Río Piedras

In the north of Puerto Rico, there is a small town called Río Piedras, relatively close to Old San Juan. Now, let me clarify: this town may be small in size but damn, when it comes to art, music, food and nightlife, this place is out of this world humongous.

Having the most important Humanities and Liberal Arts educational institution, the University of Puerto Rico, it is no surprise that this town is a Puerto Rican Mecca for the most interesting, intelligent (if there is such a thing) and colorful street art in the Metropolitan area. Everything from small coffee shops, bars, book shops, student houses, to entire condos are covered in multicolored drawings, murals and graffiti.

Paying homage to the Puerto Rican culture, social activism, society criticism, and national celebrities that have represented Puerto Rico internationally, Río Piedras is definitely a city to visit by street art aficionados like myself.

Being home to my Alma Mater and having lived some of the most colorful and cherished years of my early twenties, I treasure this town not only for my personal stories (which are so many), but most importantly, for the collective stories on its walls.
