La Calle Loíza is a street located in the Metropolitan area of Puerto Rico. This street, which in past years had become dull and in which most shops and markets had closed, has transformed itself little by little in the new “It Spot” in San Juan; where you go to see and be seen. This is the result of young local entrepreneurs taking the street into their own hands, and opening all kinds of new shops and interesting places to visit and chill, from restaurants, bars, fashion boutiques, to galleries, antiques and coffee shops.

Taking this opportunity to expose the art of established and up and coming urban artists, Stephan Langan, creator of the art production Elegel Group, started an amazing project that has given color and life to the walls of the Calle Loíza, and named it #Las50. Initially, you could find all the murals of this project in the former Wendy’s parking lot.
You can start your Calle Loíza tour with the geographic Kiikcreate, Manoela and Gray; a “collaborative couple obsessed with color”. This is the best way to set the tone for #Las50, as the colors and shapes of this mural make everyone stop and stare.

Then, when you get to the parking lot, you find yourself with some of the coolest murals you will find in Puerto Rican streets. The first one you can’t keep your eyes off is a collaboration of urban artists: Neopart Actytwo Fisu00 and Sezipuyi. They came together to create the coolest yellow submarine The Beatles could’ve imagined. You can’t help but take millions of pictures in front of it.

For fashion designers and fashion bloggers, these murals are priceless. I was totally inspired by the FreakyKiss piece for Las 50.

Art in the streets is like a ball of snow getting bigger on its way. And after Las 50, lots of local artists saw La Calle Loíza as an opportunity to expose their art to all the new, cool, young and hip visitors, looking for unique places to hang out at night and during the weekend. And so, new murals started emerging and now La Calle Loíza and its surrounding streets have become a graffiti and mural wonderland for all those looking for color in every corner. Stay tuned to see the murals that came along after, as #Las50 got bigger and bigger.
